EVELYN MARIE HIXON

Evelyn Marie Hixon, 69, of Hillsboro, died Monday, February 13, 2017, at 10:49 a.m. at Four Seasons of Washington Court House where she had been residing since December.

She was born March 1, 1947, in Greenfield, Ohio to Norman and Elizabeth Neven Miller and was a graduate of Edward Lee McClain High School in Greenfield.

Evelyn was a fine Christian woman who deeply loved her family.

She is survived by her husband, James B. Hixon whom she married December 9, 1990; three children, Carl Cottrell and his wife, Christie, Sandy Barnett and her husband, James, and Bob Cottrell, all of Greenfield; two step children, Hillary Gunn of Hillsboro and Brittany Hixon of Wilmington; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; a brother, Steve Miller of Hillsboro and a sister, Joyce Miller of Washington Court House.

The funeral was held Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at 2 p.m. at the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Washington Court House with Mell Wickensimer, director of visitation at the Grace United Methodist Church, officiating.

Pallbearers for the burial in Washington Cemetery were Carl Cottrell, Bret Pulse, Brenan Schreader, Brad Howard, Jim Barnett and Jimmy Barnett, Jr.

There were no calling hours.

VICKI ELLEN REEDY HORNEY

 

Vicki Ellen Reedy Horney, 66, of Washington Court House, Ohio passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2017, at 7:30 a.m. at the Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus where she had been a patient since Sunday.

She was born March 20, 1950, in Dayton, Ohio to George and Martha Hidy Reedy.  She was a 1968 graduate of Miami Trace High School and attended the Bowling Green State University. Except for seven years in Texas, she lived most of her life in this community.

She, along with her husband, co-owned and operated Horney’s Barbeque.  Previous to that, she had been an executive secretary for Frito-Lay in Rosenberg, TX; manager of Aziana Imports in Houston, TX and was a regional manager for Appraisal Research Corporation in Findlay, OH.

Vicki was a member and past worthy matron in 1980 of Jefferson Chapter #300 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Jeffersonville.  She enjoyed flowers and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Vicki is survived by her husband, Stephen K. Horney whom she married January 17, 1981; three children, Stephanie Stroker and her husband, Jim, of Fayette County, Ohio; Steven T. Horney and his wife, Shelly, of Jamestown, OH and Heather Morgan of Louisville, KY; nine grandchildren, Sammantha Stroker, Jimmy Stroker, Kyle Kaminski, Addie Morgan, Jace Leslie; Luke Horney, Alex Horney, Nick Horney and Andrew Horney and numerous cousins who were special to her.

A family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to a scholarship fund her Vicki’s name at Miami Trace High School, 3836 State Route 41-NW, Washington Court House, Ohio  43160.

JOSEPH EDWARD KULIN, JR.

Joseph Edward Kulin, Jr., 45, of New Holland, Ohio died Friday, February 10, 2017.

Joe was born November 16, 1971, in Steubenville, Ohio to Joseph Edward and Arlene Dee Zekas Kulin.  He was a graduate of Catholic Central High School in Steubenville and Franklin University in Columbus.  He moved to the New Holland community in 2011, from Lewis Center, Ohio.

He was currently serving as the New Holland Village Administrator.

Joe was a member of the New Holland United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony Kulin; his grandparents, John and Alice Zekas and Joseph and Edith Kulin and an aunt, Georgette Kulin.

Joe is survived by his wife, the former Heather Amanda Linder whom he married July 27, 2002; four children, Kiersten, Kamille, Keegan and Kellan Kulin; his mother and step father, Arlene and George Felsoci of Steubenville; his father and step-mother, Joseph and Stephanie Kulin of Follansbee, WV; a brother, Michael Kulin and his friend, Emily, and nephews, Nick and Jack Kulin, all of Canal Winchester; mother-in-law, Christy Dunlap; father-in-law Monty (Laura) Linder, all of Washington Court House; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Tracy Linder of Kettering, Steve and Halie Dunlap of Washington Court House, Matt and Ashley Ooten of Bloomingburg and Joe Ooten of Washington Court House.

The funeral will be Wednesday, February 15, 2017; at 11 a.m. at the New Holland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Brian Dunham, pastor at the church, officiating.  Burial will follow in the New Holland Cemetery.

JOHN WILLARD SWAYNE

John Willard Swayne, 76, of Washington Court House, Ohio died Saturday, February 4, 2017, at 4:44 a.m. at the Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe where he had been a patient two weeks.

John was born November 26, 1940, in Greenfield, Ohio to John Franklin and Myrtle Jane Eubanks Swayne.  He was a 1958 graduate of Washington High School and had lived in Greenfield before returning to Washington Court House in 2002.

He was a scheduler at Armco for 36 years and then worked at New Sabina Industries.

John was a member of the Greenfield Church of Christ and served aboard the U.S.S. Essex while in the United States Navy.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward, Leroy and Hugh Swayne and a sister, Lena Fenner.

John is survived by his wife, the former Connie Jean Bobb whom he married March 1, 2002; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Dawn Swayne of Washington Court House and John E. and Melissa Swayne of West Union, OH; three grandchildren, Tyler Joseph Cook and his girlfriend, Jordon Anderson and her daughter, Zoei, Kaleigh Swayne and Madison Swayne; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Flo Swayne of Springfield, OH and Paul and Dorothy Swayne of Delaware, OH; a sister, Betty Leslein of Georgia; special friends who were like family, Gary, Heather, Jacob and Hannah Rose and Marvin and Debbie Carr, David and Jeanne Carr and Malinda Carr and his special pet cat, Blackie.

The funeral will be Friday, February 10, 2017, at 2 p.m. at the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Washington Court House with Danny Dodds and Richie Martin officiating.  Burial will follow in Highlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 4-7 p.m.

BETTY R. DAVIS

Betty R. Davis, 92, of Washington Court House, Ohio  died Friday, February 3, 2017, at 8 a.m. at the Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus following a brief illness.

Betty was born May 12, 1924, in Brown County, Ohio to Cass T. and Eva Catherine List Rhoten.  She lived most of her life in Fayette County and Washington Court House.

She was a seamstress and had formerly been manager of Monique Fabrics.   She had also worked at Bee-In-Stitches and Homespun Creations.

Betty was a member of St. Colman of Cloyne Catholic Church; the Court House Quilters and was a longtime volunteer with the Fayette County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Myrl and Donald Rhoten.

Betty is survived by a daughter, Jean Ann Davis of Washington Court House; two nephews, Ronnie and Mike (Nancy) Rhoten of Brown County, Ohio and special friends, Marie, Jeff, and Brendan Fetters of Washington Court House.

The funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, February 10, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the St. Colman of Cloyne Catholic Church by the Reverend Father Jan C. Sullivan, former pastor at the church.  Burial will follow in St. Colman Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may call at the church from 9:30 a.m. Friday, February 10, 2017, until time of the service at 11 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, 219 South North Street, Washington Court House, Ohio  43160.

LORIE MERRITT ARMBRUST

Lorie Merritt Armbrust, 94, of Washington Court House, Ohio died Wednesday, February 1, 2017, at 7:02 p.m. at Court House Manor where she had been a resident since July 28, 2016.

Mrs. Armbrust was born May 13, 1922, in Washington Court House, Ohio to Joseph H. and Gladys L. Brown Merritt.  She was the salutatorian of the 1940 graduating class at Washington High School and attended Wilmington College.

As a member of the Future Teachers of America in high school, Lorie tutored grade school children in arithmetic.  She went on to a career in teaching music, girls’ chorus, seventh and eighth grade math and high school business math.  Later, she served as Fayette County Recorder for 22 years.  As an Ohio Recorders’ Association member, she held each of the offices, including a term as President.  She and her husband, Norman, worked as a team at the Fayette County Children’s Home, Norman as Superintendent and Lorie as Matron.

She was an active member of the McNair Memorial Presbyterian Church where she had been an elder, a long-time choir director, church pianist and Sunday school teacher.  She organized and was the first president of the Washington Court House Kiwaniannes; was a charter member of the Fayette County Choral Society and had served on the board of Habitat for Humanity.  She was a past president of the Washington Court House Business and Professional Women’s Club and currently was a member of Altrusa International of which she was the first treasurer of the Washington Court House chapter.  She was inducted into the Central Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame in 2012, and was honored as a Hometown Hero by the American Red Cross in Fayette County, also in 2012.  Music was an important of her life.  She was an accomplished pianist and vocalist as well as an excellent cook and seamstress.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman A. Armbrust on August 10, 2016; by a brother, Marvin J. Merritt; a sister and brother-in-law, Alice Jean and Roy E. Noon; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harold and Rosemary Armbrust and a brother-in-law, Edwin Thompson.

Mrs. Armbrust is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and David Ellen of Nine Miles Falls, WA; two sons, Greg Armbrust and his wife, Lillian, of Stockton, CA and Gary Armbrust of Washington Court House; three grandchildren, Heather Uribe, Adam (Danyel) Ellen and Scott Grayson; five great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Carol Merritt of Middleton, OH and Rebecca J. Thompson of Washington Court House and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Washington Court House with the Rev. Steven A. Watters, pastor at the McNair Memorial Presbyterian Church, officiating.  Burial will follow in the Washington Cemetery.

STEVEN ALLEN NEVILLE CLAWSON

Steven Allen Neville Clawson, 33, of Washington Court House, Ohio died Wednesday, February 1, 2017, at his home.

Steven was born September 24, 1983, in Columbus, Ohio to David Lyle and Penny Louise Neville Clawson.  He was a 2002 graduate of Washington Senior High School and lived most of his life in this community where he was a carpenter.

He is survived by his mother and step father, Penny and Jerry Smith; his father and step mother, David and Deborah Clawson; a daughter, Marley Marie Clawson, all of
Washington Court House; a brother and sister-in-law, Johnathan and Ashley Clawson of Columbus; a sister and brother-in-law, Laura and Victor Linsten of New Holland, nieces and nephews, Logan, Lilly and Levi Clawson, Lea and Heather Wing and the mother of his daughter, Janelle Bailey of Washington Court House.

A private memorial service will be held at the Anchor Baptist with church pastor Jeremy Griffith officiating.  Burial of the cremains will be at a later date in New Holland Cemetery.
