Louis George Soos, 93, of Washington Court House, Ohio, formerly of Wakeman, Ohio, passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at 2:23 a.m. at The Ohio State East Hospital in Columbus where he had been a patient since Saturday.
Lou was born January 27, 1933, on Wheeling Island, WV to Louis and Viola Macklin Soos. He was a graduate of Martins Ferry High School, worked at Nickles Bakery, and attended Bethany College in West Virginia prior to joining the United States Army. Upon returning from the service, he attended The Ohio State University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Science Education. Lou was also a lifelong Ohio State football fan and had many fond memories of tutoring and running around with OSU football greats like Freddie Bruney and Vic Janowicz.
After college, Lou moved to Lorain County where he taught middle and high school science for Elyria Public Schools. While teaching, he earned a Master of Science Degree in Chemistry and Physics from Kent State University. He retired from the Elyria Public School System in 1992, ending his 32-year career as a chemistry and physics teacher at Elyria West High School. Lou loved science and the outdoors. A proud Eagle Scout, he also spent summers giving back to the Boy Scouts serving as a camp counselor. Additionally, he worked several summers at the 4H Camp on Kelley’s Island and at Oglebay Park in Wheeling, WV.
Lou was a faithful Christian and a 54-year member of Birmingham Methodist Church in Ohio where he served as church treasurer and worked diligently in planning and carrying out church chicken dinners and harvest festivals. He was a member and past president of the Fireland Lions Club where he was a Melvin Jones Fellow. He also served on the Henrietta Township Zoning Board of Appeals and was a founding member of the Lorain County School Employees Credit Union. As a veteran of the United States Army, he was a member of Vermillion Post #347 of the American Legion. He was a 56-year member of the Elyria Masonic Lodge F & AM #787 as well as Wakeman Chapter #177 of the Royal Arch Masons of Ohio (formerly Marshall Chapter #47), Elyria Council #86 and Elyria Commandry #60. He lived most of his life in Lorain County before moving to Washington Court House two years ago.
Lou was preceded in death by his parents and a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Mary Soos. He is survived by his wife, Janet Levon (Scott) Soos whom he married on August 5th, 1964; a daughter, Javonne Mullins and her husband, Rob, and two grandchildren, Dalton and Audrey Mullins, all of Washington Court House as well as several nieces and nephews.
To honor his wishes, cremation will be observed.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date at the Birmingham Methodist Church in Erie County. Burial of the cremains will be in Birmingham Cemetery.
