WILLARD CHARLES CLEMMONS

Willard Charles Clemmons, 78, of Atlanta, Ohio died Thursday, December 9, 2021, at 11:43 p.m. at the Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe where he had been a patient since November 24.

Willard was born July 3, 1943, in Ross County, Ohio to William Charles and Lois Riehle Clemmons.  He was a 1961 graduate of Ashville High School and lived most of his life in Pickaway County and the Atlanta community.

He was a carpenter and worked for several union companies before retiring in 1998, from the Miles-McClellan Construction in Columbus where he had worked for 12 years.

Willard enjoyed the outdoors, coon hunting, fishing, woodworking and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John F. Clemmons.

Willard is survived by his wife, the former Alice Marie Hyatt, whom he married November 25, 1962; two sons, Keith Clemmons and his friend, Joe Liston, of Mount Sterling, Dean Clemmons and his wife, Christal, of Atlanta; three grandchildren, Jeremy Cochenour and his fiancé, Kelly Bruce, of Atlanta, Brittany Cochenour of Columbus and Ciera Clemmons and her fiancé, Jordan Pine, of Atlanta; several great grandchildren; a great great granddaughter; his step mother, Shirley Clemmons of Circleville; a brother, Mark (Telisha) Clemmons; a step brother, Mike Vangundy of Ashville; a step sister, Melony Vangundy of Circleville; a sister-n-law, Brenda Clemmons of Circleville and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be Tuesday, December 14, 2021, at 11 a.m. at the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in New Holland.  Burial will follow in the Springlawn Cemetery in Williamsport.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 5-8 p.m.

RICHARD WILLIAM SOUTHWORTH

Richard William Southworth, 86, of Washington Court House, Ohio died Friday, December 10, 2021, at 1:40 a.m. shortly after arrival at the Adena Fayette Medical Center.

Dick was born November 25, 1935, in Pickaway County at New Holland, Ohio to Harold David and Anna Lois Gault Southworth.  He lived most of his life in Washington Court House.

Before his retirement, he and his wife had been co-owners and operators of Mugs and Jugs. Dick had formerly been a milkman with Sagar Dairy and in his earlier years had detailed cars.

Dick was an active participant in the Silver Sneakers program at the YMCA.  He was an avid golfer and had been a member of the Washington County Club where he was proud to have had a hole in one.  However, his greatest joy was being a husband, father and grandfather.

On May 5, 1956, he married the former Doris Pauline Chapman.  She preceded him in death on December 15, 2020.  He was also preceded by a son, Steven Lee Southworth on December 4, 2016; a brother, Robert Southworth in 1996, and two sisters, Patricia Maddux in 1998, and Marsha Holloway in 1975.

Dick is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Buck Minyo and two grandchildren, Spencer and Trevor Minyo, all of Washington Court House.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation took place.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family at the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Washington Court House with the Rev. Todd Wallace, pastor at the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

WILMA MARGARET RULON

Wilma Margaret Rulon, 98, of Washington Court House, Ohio died Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at 7 p.m. at Adena Fayette Medical Center where she had been a patient since December 3.

Mrs. Rulon was born August 12,1923, in Clinton County, Ohio to Floyd and Hazel Swaney Jones. She was a 1942 graduate of New Vienna High School and moved to
Washington Court House in 1960, from Wilmington.

During World War II, she worked at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base as an airplane inspector and then was a clerical worker in the dental clinic.  She had worked at the New Vienna Canning Factory, at BATJAK, K-Mart and retired as a clerk at the Fayette County Title Department.

She was a charter member of the Wilmington Church of Christ (Christian).  After moving to Washington Court House, she became a dedicated member of the First Christian Church where she was a Sunday school teacher in the Junior Department and director of the
Vacation Bible School.  She was a member of the Loyal Daughters Sunday school class, the Women’s Fellowship, the Martha Guild and she spearheaded numerous church committees.  She recently had been attending Crossroads Christian Church.

Mrs. Rulon enjoyed traveling and loved sitting in her garage and visiting with the neighbors as they passed by.  Her greatest love was her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

On December 22, 1946, she married William M. Rulon.  He preceded her in death on July 15, 1997.  She was also preceded by a brother, James Lee Jones in 1986, and a son-in-law, William S. Halliday in 2003.

She is survived by three daughters, Linda Halliday, Marsha Rulon and Gayle Robinson and her husband, Jay, all of Washington Court House; five grandchildren, Bill Halliday, II and his wife, Erica, of Washington Court House, Cara Helmes and her husband, Steve, of West Chester, Ohio, Kate Halliday and Kevin Woods, of Washington Court House, Amy Jo Morris and her husband, Chad, of Liberty Township, Ohio and Scott Robinson and his wife, Margo, of Washington Court House; seven great grandchildren, Katie and Ryan Helmes, Sadie and Macie Halliday, Charlotte and Liam Robinson and Emily Morris; several nieces and nephews and special friends and her cat, Cotie.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at 1 p.m. at the Washington Cemetery with Steve D. Henderson, former minister at First Christian Church, officiating.  Burial will be under the direction of the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Washington Court House.

There will be no calling hours.

MARION I. FRANTZ

Marion Irvin Frantz, 82, of New Holland, Ohio passed away on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at 2:24pm.

Marion was born December 9, 1938, in Dublin, Ohio to Samuel P. and Eulalia J. (Billingsley) Frantz. He was a 1956 graduate of Dublin High School. He and his wife Pam (Jenkins) and two children (Todd and Brad) moved to New Holland in 1969, where Marion owned and operated a successful farming operation. Following the move, he and Pam had two more children, Scott and Shannon.

Marion was a conservationist through and through and one of his most-loved activities was planting trees. He was also a loving husband, father, uncle, and grandfather and one of the kindest people on the planet.  Perhaps one of his most endearing qualities was his trade-mark whistle. You could always locate him on the farm if you just listened for one of the made-up tunes coming from his lips.

Marion was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel P. and Eulalia J. Frantz and by his son, Scott.

He is survived by his wife, the former Pamela Jenkins whom he married January 26, 1963; his sister, Bernice C. Stephenson; his son, Todd Frantz; his son, Brad Frantz; and daughter Shannon Jacobs; his sons and daughters in-law, Brian Sammons, Kelli (Camp) Frantz, James Jacobs, and Debbi Frantz; his grandchildren, Hayden Frantz, Tyler Sammons, Holli Frantz, Samuel Frantz, Case Jacobs and Huck Jacobs; his two great-grandchildren, Jayden Sammons and Bella Newton; and other members of the extended family and many loving friends.

Marion’s family extends special thanks to the caregivers from Greenfield Skilled Nursing and Rehab and Heartland Hospice.

A celebration of life, open to the public, will be held Saturday, June 25, 2022, at 2:00pm at Marion’s home in New Holland.

The family asks that you consider planting a tree in Marion’s honor or donate to Heartland Hospice or the hospice of your choice.

GENE PAUL HUGHES

Gene Paul Hughes, 89, of Washington Court House, Ohio died Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at his home.

Gene was born September 8, 1932, at Tollesboro in Lewis County, KY to Elmer J. and Tillie Jones Hughes.

He was a United States Navy veteran and served during the Korean Conflict.  Following his discharge from the service, he received a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in industrial arts from Morehead State University.

He was an industrial arts teacher and taught at Felicity High School in Clermont County for five years and then in the Washington City Schools for ten years. Following his retirement from teaching in 1967, he became a builder of spec homes.  He also was a remodeler, furniture maker and did other specialized building projects.  He retired in 1996.

Gene was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, the Fayette County Retired Teachers Association and Paul H. Hughey Post #25 of the American Legion.  He was also an avid golfer.

On October 17,1952, he married the former Juanita Porter.  She preceded him in death on June 2, 2021.  He was also preceded by a brother and four sisters.

Gene is survived by a daughter, Alisa Hughes Dorn and her husband, Phil, of Washington Court House; a son, Michael G. Hughes and his wife, Christine Black-Hughes, of Eagle Lake, MN; two grandchildren, Kyle Galecki and his wife, Kristi, and Camille Galecki Kewer and her husband, Kevin; four great grandchildren, Cora and Ethan Galecki and Kiley and Caleb Kewer; three step grandsons, Jesse, Douglas and Matthew (Katie) Breitigan; a step great granddaughter, Luci Breitigan and a sister, Shirley Henderson of Cincinnati.

The funeral will be Saturday, December 11, 2021, at 2 p.m. at the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Washington Court House with Mell Wickensimer, director of visitation at the Grace United Methodist Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 1 p.m. until time of the service.

A private family graveside service will be held Sunday at 11 a.m. at the West Union Cemetery in Adams County.

BETTY JANE “JANEY” COTTRILL

Betty Jane “Janey” Cottrill, 96, of New Holland, Ohio died Saturday, December 4, 2021, at 8:40 p.m. at OhioHealth Berger Hospital in Circleville where she had been a patient since November 29.

Janey was born January 29, 1925, in Ross County, Ohio to Ralph and Rena Friece Adams.  She was a graduate of Frankfort High School and lived most of her life in Williamsport and New Holland.

She formerly had been an aide at the Brooks-Yates School in Circleville.

Janey enjoyed cooking and gardening and especially attending the school events of her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, (Wallace) Joe Cottrill on November 7, 1995; a daughter, Cheryl Cottrill; a son-in-law, Darrell Wisecup; a brother, Ralph Adams, Jr. and two sisters, Ruthie Templin and Geraldine Riley.

Janey is survived by four children, Glenna Wisecup of Williamsport, Tina White and her husband, Michael, of Chillicothe, Vicki Williams and her husband, Brian, of Ashville and Scott Cottrill and his fiancé, Nancy, of Mount Sterling; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at 1 p.m. at the Springlawn Cemetery in Williamsport with Rob Collins, chaplain for Adena Hospice, officiating.  Burial will be under the direction of the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in New Holland.

There will be no calling hours.

ELLYN JOY BARRY

Ellyn Joy Barry, 94, of New Holland, Ohio died Saturday, December 4, 2021, at 10:30 p.m. at Court House Manor in Washington Court House where she had been a resident since October 23, 2020.

Mrs. Barry was born November 22, 1927, at Keyser in Mineral County, West Virginia to Clarence M. and Lois Mae Linthicum Everly.  She had formerly lived in Arizona but lived most of her life in Grove City, Ohio before moving to New Holland in 2016.

She was a retired bank teller.

Mrs. Barry formerly was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Amsterdam, Ohio.  She enjoyed singing and, while in Columbus, sang with the Columbus Chapter of the Sweet Adelines.  After moving to Arizona, she sang with the award-winning Scottsdale Chapter of the Sweet Adelines.  She also sang with the Valley Voices in New Philadelphia, Ohio.

Mrs. Barry was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Richard Barry in 2001; a daughter, Catherine Ann Barry in 1992 ; a son-in-law, Monty Douglas “Cowboy”  Johnson in 2021; two brothers, Clarence “Bud” Everly, Jr. and Richard “Dick” Everly and a sister, Mary Kathryn Webb.

She is survived by a daughter Patricia M. Johnson and a granddaughter, Jennifer Loyce Johnson, both of New Holland and several nieces and nephews.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation will be observed.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in the Fort Steuben Burial Estates at Wintersville, Ohio in Jefferson County.

Arrangements were completed by the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in New Holland.

DOROTHY D. (DOTTIE) ERVIN

Dorothy Daily (Dottie) Ervin, 90, of Washington Court House, Ohio died Monday, November 29, 2021, at 8:23 p.m. at the Adena Fayette Medical Center where she had been a patient since Friday.

Dottie was born August 15, 1931, at Beaver in Pike County, Ohio to Charles Clayton and Constance Gayle Keller Pyle.  She moved to Washington Court House in 1942, from Beaver and was a 1950 graduate of Washington High School.

She had formerly worked at Risch’s Drug Store, the Record-Herald, Armco and NCR.  She was also a realtor for 22 years.

Dottie was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church.

On September 20, 1953, she married Jon W. Ervin.  He preceded her in death on September 19, 2014.  She was also preceded by a son, Dan Douglas Ervin on December 24, 2016; brother, Jack E. Pyle and a sister, Constance M. Meriweather.

She is survived by two children, Bruce Ervin and his wife, Sandy, of Centerville and Laura Ervin of Westerville; four grandchildren, Kathy Ervin, Brandon (Alex) Ervin, Courtney (Chris) Cook and Andrew Ervin; two great grandchildren, Bailey and Claire Ervin; a sister, Shirley Stackhouse of Washington Court House; nieces and nephews and many friends.

At Dottie’s request, cremation took place.

A memorial service will be held Monday, December 6, 2021, at 11 a.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church with Mell Wickensimer, director of visitation at the church, officiating.

Private burial of the cremains will be in Washington Cemetery under the direction of the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Washington Court House.

MARTHA E. IRONS KELLENBERGER

Martha E. Irons Kellenberger, 88, a resident of Court House Manor since January 2021, died Saturday, November 27, 2021, at 9:40 p.m. shortly after arrival at the Adena Fayette Medical Center.

Martha was born June 8, 1933, in Fayette County, Ohio to Clyde and Nellie Penrod Irons.  She was a graduate of Washington High School and a lifelong resident of this community.

She was a member of the Fayette County Commission on Aging and the First Christian Church.

On September 4, 1955, she married Dana H. Kellenberger, Jr.  He preceded her in death on July 18, 2002.  She was also preceded by her parents and four brother, Ralph Irons, Clyde Irons, Jr., James Irons and baby Bobby Irons.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Jeffrey King of Washington Court House, grandchildren and great grandchildren, Bethany Kloss and her husband, Aaron, and their children, Lane and Aven, of Centerburg, Ohio; Valerie Higelin and her husband, Brandon, and their daughter, Camden, of Albuquerque, NM and Michael King and his wife, Morgan, and their daughters, Liza, Molly, Kate and Hattie of Morehead, KY; a sister, Betty Oesterle of Washington Court House and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be Friday, December 3, 2021, at 11 a.m. at the Bloomingburg Cemetery with Danny Dodds, minister at the Greenfield Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be under the direction of the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Washington Court House.

RUSSELL L. (SONNY) JACOBS, JR.

Russell L. (Sonny) Jacobs, Jr., 84, of New Holland, died Monday, November 29, 2021, at 9:53 a.m. at his home.

Sonny was born September 29, 1937, in Ross County, Ohio to Russell L. (Bud) and Donna Mae Durflinger Jacobs.  He was a 1955 graduate of New Holland High School and lived most of his life in the New Holland community.

Before his retirement in 2000, he had been an engineer at the General Electric Lamp Plant in Circleville where he had worked for 40 years.   He was also a carpenter and built many homes.

Sonny was a member of the Miami Trace Athletic Boosters Club and had formerly coached biddy basketball.  He excelled in basketball while in high school and was named most valuable player.  He loved all sports and, as an adult, played in various independent sports leagues.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

On January 14, 1956, he married the former Evelyn M. Ater.  She preceded him in death on September 9, 2016.  He was also preceded by a grandson, Rhett Stark in 2010.

Sonny is survived by two daughters, Kim (Michael Reser) Jacobs of New Holland and Kathy (Roger Shafer) Stark of Greenfield; seven grandchildren, Kari (Danny) Whalen-Boone, Kyle (Cari) Whalen, Stefani (James) Whalen-Davis, Holley (Bryon) Boka, CMSGT Jeffrey (Bianca) Ritenour, TSGT Ryan (Andrea) Stark and Rebekah (Daniel) Allen; 22 great grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Judy and David Sheridan of Chillicothe; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday, December 3, 2021, at 1 p.m. at the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in New Holland.  Burial will follow in the New Holland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home in New Holland Friday from 11 a.m. until time of the service.
