Gene Paul Hughes, 89, of Washington Court House, Ohio died Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at his home.

Gene was born September 8, 1932, at Tollesboro in Lewis County, KY to Elmer J. and Tillie Jones Hughes.

He was a United States Navy veteran and served during the Korean Conflict.  Following his discharge from the service, he received a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in industrial arts from Morehead State University.

He was an industrial arts teacher and taught at Felicity High School in Clermont County for five years and then in the Washington City Schools for ten years. Following his retirement from teaching in 1967, he became a builder of spec homes.  He also was a remodeler, furniture maker and did other specialized building projects.  He retired in 1996.

Gene was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, the Fayette County Retired Teachers Association and Paul H. Hughey Post #25 of the American Legion.  He was also an avid golfer.

On October 17,1952, he married the former Juanita Porter.  She preceded him in death on June 2, 2021.  He was also preceded by a brother and four sisters.

Gene is survived by a daughter, Alisa Hughes Dorn and her husband, Phil, of Washington Court House; a son, Michael G. Hughes and his wife, Christine Black-Hughes, of Eagle Lake, MN; two grandchildren, Kyle Galecki and his wife, Kristi, and Camille Galecki Kewer and her husband, Kevin; four great grandchildren, Cora and Ethan Galecki and Kiley and Caleb Kewer; three step grandsons, Jesse, Douglas and Matthew (Katie) Breitigan; a step great granddaughter, Luci Breitigan and a sister, Shirley Henderson of Cincinnati.

The funeral will be Saturday, December 11, 2021, at 2 p.m. at the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Washington Court House with Mell Wickensimer, director of visitation at the Grace United Methodist Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 1 p.m. until time of the service.

A private family graveside service will be held Sunday at 11 a.m. at the West Union Cemetery in Adams County.
