Richard William “Dobie” Allen, 66, of New Holland, Ohio died Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at 12:11 p.m. shortly after arrival at the Adena Fayette Medical Center in Washington Court House. He had been in failing health but his death was sudden and unexpected.
Dobie was born February 12, 1959, in Washington Court House, Ohio to Richard Edwin and Corrina Joanne Adams Allen. He was a 1978 graduate of Miami Trace High School and lived most of his in Washington Court House before moving to New Holland in 1996.
He was a sergeant at the Madison Correctional Institution in London, Ohio for 18 years before his retirement in 2004.
Dobie enjoyed fishing and the Cincinnati Bengals, but his greatest pleasure was spending time with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Chad Moore and a brother-in-law, Barry Cartwright.
Dobie is survived by his wife, the former Mary Jane Cartwright, whom he married December 15, 1978; four children, Samantha Jane Allen of Washington Court House, Rachel (Brad Binegar) Allen of New Holland, Stephanie Mitchell and her husband, Gabe, of Greenfield and Jeremy Oman of Columbus; five grandchildren, Kyle Moore, Brodie (Eboney Young) Allen, Caden Allen, Madison Allen and Kaylinn Vance; a brother, Roger “Tony” Nash and his wife, Chiquita; two sisters, Leah Jo Nash and Linda Stephens and her husband, Allen; a special sister-in-law, Theresa Unser; a host of special friends including, Benjamin Vance who is the father of Madison and Kaylinn; William Zander, Anthony “Slim” and Michele Littleton and Tom Sellers and many nieces and nephews.
As his final act of kindness, he was a participant in the Lifeline of Ohio tissue donor program and generously gave the gift of healing, sight and life to others.
To honor his wishes, cremation will be observed. Burial of the cremains will be held at a later date in the Highlawn Cemetery in Washington Court House.
A celebration of life and a time for food and fellowship will be held at the family home, 29 North Church Street, New Holland on Monday, May 26, 2025, starting at 2 p.m.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Washington Court House.
