Joanne (Jody) Hanawalt, 93, of Washington Court House, Ohio passed away Thursday, April 9, 2026, at 5:08 a.m. at the resident of her daughter and son-in-law in Galloway, Ohio.
She was born June 25, 1932, in Hillsboro, Ohio to Fred and Gertrude Foraker Garrett. She was a graduate of Edward R. McClain High School in Greenfield.
She was employed by Lowell Wilken as a stenographer and receptionist for seven years.
She was a member of WCH Grace Methodist Church where she served on the administrative board and the finance committee. She was also a member of the Rebekah Circle of the United Methodist Women and had served as president and treasurer. She chaired the church’s kitchen committee for several years and worked in the church’s kitchen for over 35 years. She had been a member of the Washington County Club and had served on the board of directors. She loved playing golf and bridge and was chairman and treasurer of the Ladies Bridge Club at the Washington County Club. She was a past member and officer of the Fayette County Republican Club and had served as a poll worker and judge for the Fayette County Board of Elections. She was a member and past president of the Fayette County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and chairman of the sewing group and bazaar. She had volunteered over 8,000 hours with the hospital auxiliary. She had served on the board of the FACC.
On September 27, 1952, she married her high school sweetheart, James Raymond Hanawalt, who preceded her in death on August 23, 2006. She was also preceded by her sister and brother-in-law, Ella and Robert Cordes; a brother-in-law, Don Hanawalt and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tom and Mary Hanawalt.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jana and Andy Johnson of Galloway, Ohio; a son, Jed G. Hanawalt of South Bend, Ind.; four granddaughters, Brittany Johnson of Ada, OH, Rikki Johnson of Kentucky, Haley Johnson Letourneau of Raeford, NC and Tory Johnson of Charlotte, NC; six great grandchildren; a special niece, Cathy Cordes Kessler of Cincinnati, OH and nephew, Rob Cordes of Florida.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 1 p.m. at the Washington Cemetery with Dale Lynch officiating.
Friends may call at the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Washington Court House on Saturday, April 18, 2026, from 11 a.m. until the time of the graveside service.
