George Weston Shoemaker, 79, of Washington Court House, Ohio died Sunday, October 12, 2025, at 12 a.m. at Court House Manor where he had been a patient since Monday.
George was born October 9, 1946, in Mansfield in Richland County, Ohio to Herbert Eugene and Sanchen Cutter Shoemaker. He was a 1964 graduate of Mansfield Malabar High School and received a bachelor’s degree in English education from The Ohio State University in 1964. He later earned a master’s degree in English from The Ohio State University.
He was an English teacher at Washington Senior High School for 32 years before his retirement in 2002. He also served as yearbook advisor for many years. and was named Teacher of the Year.
George was a master gardener and had served on the tree committee for the City of Washington Court House and was long-time pool manager for the Washington Park Association. He was an avid bicyclist and for many years rode in the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure and later served as a volunteer with GOBA. He had also served in the Ohio Air National Guard.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sanchen Croft.
George is survived by his wife, the former Carolyn Elaine Crotty whom he married June 29, 1968; two children, Julie Miller and her husband, Matthew, of Pittsburg, PA. and Jon Shoemaker and his wife, Katie, of Chicago; six grandchildren, Chloe, Sophie, Liv and Jill Miller and Noah and Leo Shoemaker; a sister, Bonnie Kaden and her husband, Hayden, of San Miguel Allende, Mexico and a brother-in-law, Cole Croft of Mt. Gilead, Ohio.
To honor his wishes, cremation will be observed
A celebration of life is planned for Sunday, November 9, 2025, at The Depot on Main, 215 South Main Street, Washington Court House, Ohio from 2-5 pm.
