CAROL JEANNE VAN METER, PhD

Carol Jeanne Van Meter, PhD, 85, of Washington Court House, Ohio died Thursday, July 31, 2025, at 2:39 p.m. at the Copper Knoll Health and Rehabilitation Center where she had been residing since September 2024, due to complications associated with Parkinson’s Disease.

Carol was born January 1, 1940, in New Orleans, LA to Lorenz Peter and Ursula Mildred LaRose Keller.

She was a received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Loyola University in New Orleans.  She received a scholarship to the University of California (Davis) where she received her Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Science.  She was hired as an associate professor in the Department of Agronomy at the University of Kentucky.  She resigned from her position at the University of Kentucky to follow her husband when he was drafted in 1969.  Afterwards, she taught at Wellston High School in Wellson, OH until she was hired to teach at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, OH.  She later held numerous positions at the Uranium Enrichment Facility in Piketon, OH ending as a supervisor of two laboratories before her retirement in 1998.

Dr. Van Meter was baptized January 14, 1940, and currently was a member of the St. Colman of Cloyne Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband, Carroll L. Van Meter whom she married December 4, 1967; two children, Christopher R. Van Meter and his wife, Mary Ann, of Washington Court House and Maria E. Van Meter Spencer and her husband, Matthew, of New Zealand.  She is the grandmother of Jacob M. Van Meter, Cynthia R. Spencer and Katherine L. Spencer.

The funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at 1 p.m. at the St. Colman of Cloyne Catholic Church by the Rev. Father Cyrus M. Haddad, pastor at the church.  Burial will follow in the St. Colman Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may call at the church from 12 Noon Wednesday until the time of the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Meals on Wheels program at the Fayette County Commission on Aging, 1179 South Elm Street, Washington Court House, Ohio 43160.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Washington Court House.
