Gary Ward Cockerill, 80, of Leesburg, Ohio died Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at 9:50 p.m. at Court House Manor where he had been residing since April 2, 2018.
Gary was born January 9, 1938, in Fayette County, Ohio to Marion Jacob and Mary Jo Bireley Cockerill. He was a graduate of Washington High School and was a life-long resident of this community where he was a retired farmer.
He was a member of Washington C.H. Lodge #129 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks; Fayette Aerie #423 of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and was a social member of Paul H. Hughey Post #25 of the American Legion.
Gary was preceded in death by a son, James Marion (J.M.) Cockerill on May 13, 2008, and his parents.
He is survived by a daughter, Garel Armintrout of Washington Court House; a son, Gary Cockerill, II of Sabina; five grandchildren, Justin (Ashley) Armintrout, Megan (Craig) Smith, Maura Cockerill, Mason (Allison) Cockerill and Madison Cockerill; five great grandchildren, Mariah, McKenna and Brock Cockerill and A. J. and Grace Armintrout; his wife, the former Mary Ann Bennington; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Myrna Cockerill of Washington Court House and three sisters, Marjorie Hutson of Cincinnati, Shirley Cupp Johnson of Washington Court House and Jo Ann (Jodi) Kirkpatrick of New Holland.
The funeral will be Wednesday, August 1, 2018, at 1 p.m. at the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Washington Court House with Mell Wickensimer, director of visitation at the Grace United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Washington Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 4-8 p.m.
