Gary Dwyer Junk, DVM, 69, of Washington Court House, Ohio died Tuesday, September 18, 2018, at 10:34 p.m. at his home while surrounded by loved ones.
Dr. Junk was born September 28, 1948, in Columbus, Ohio to Dick R. and Carolyn Dwyer Junk. He was a 1966 graduate of Miami Trace High School and a 1975 graduate of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He was a lifelong resident of this community.
Upon graduation, he began his veterinary career with his father. He later established the Fayette Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Daryl Waits joined the practice in 1998. Dr. Junk became American Animal Hospital Association certified in 1988.
He was a member of the American, Ohio and Southern Ohio Veterinary Medical Associations and volunteered his services as veterinary to the Fayette County Fair for over 40 years. He was a huge supporter of 4-H, FFA and the youth of Fayette County. Dr. Junk was a breeder and owner of Standardbred race horses and was a member of the United States Trotting Association and the Fayette County Harness Horsemen’s Association. He also enjoyed agriculture and farming. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and a member and past president of the Washington Rotary Club.
On December 28, 1981, he married the former Donna Mary Nieman. She preceded him in death on December 23, 2007. He was also preceded by his parents.
He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Alexis Junk of Delaware, OH; two sisters, Marilyn Schmitz and her husband, Larry, of Treasure Island, FL: and Kathy Howard of Centerville, Ohio; a brother-in-law, Brad Nieman of Buffalo; NY, several nieces and nephews; his significant other, Lisa Custis; special friends, Nick and Sunny Cummings of Washington Court House, Grenetta and Mark Ritenour of Jeffersonville and Dr. Daryl and Kris Waits of Washington Court House.
The funeral will be Saturday, September 22, 2018, at 11 a.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Fox, pastor at the church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Washington Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church Friday from 4-8 p.m.
